From Bala Abubakar, Gusau
Over 16,800 women were empowered in Zamfara State through the empowerment programme initiated by the Zamfara State Governor’s Wife, Hajiya Aisha Bello Matawalle Maradun.
The wife of the Governor disclosed this in Kauran Namoda Local Government during the graduation ceremony of a 3-day ‘train the trainer’ programme in making face masks and hand sanitizers for 20 women selected from five emirates comprising Shinkafi, Moriki, Zurmi, Birnin Magaji and Kaura Namoda respectively.
The programme according to her, was initiated to alleviate the threatening rate of poverty amongst women across the state through the training and start-up capital of 20,000 naira to each of the selected 1,800 women from the 14 local government areas of the state.
“Investigations by experts had it that, women had occupied over 90 percent of poor class in Zamfara state, this may not be unconnected with either killing of husbands by bandits or loss in auto crashes and or by increasing rate of unemployment suffered mostly by the category of men,” She remarked.
The Governor’s wife informed that, the programme was succeeding as a number of beneficiaries were actively participating in business activities in the state.
“The programme, though Zamfara is now COVID-19 free, was planned to be continuous so that the state would succeed in fighting poverty among women and at the same time, fight COVID-19 and other infectious diseases among the good people of the state,” Aisha said.
