Yobe State Police Command has arrested 72 suspects for various offences, including homicides, armed robberies, kidnappings, cattle rustling, farmer/herder conflicts and rape in three months.
The Commissioner of Police, Yahaya S. Abubakar, who disclosed this during a quarterly media conference, stated that so far 39 suspects have been arraigned in various courts in the State for prosecution, with 28 suspects still standing trial, while 11 suspects have already been convicted and sentenced to various jail terms.
Others, he said, include 15 suspects who are under various stages of investigation, preparatory to being processed to the courts for prosecution.
According to him, the successes recorded in the last three months were attributed to proactive strategies and the dedicated efforts of the personnel.
He said the State is also confronted with challenges of heinous crimes such as homicides, which are mainly associated with farmer/herder conflicts.
Other prevalent crimes include rape, theft of domestic animals and house/store breakings.
He lamented that it’s against this background that the Command reviewed and updated its crime prevention strategies by embedding PMF personnel (on special duty in the State) into ‘Operation Puff Adder’, to intensify its operational activities across the State.
“Furthermore, a total of 19 heads of cattle and 21 sheep have been recovered from animal thieves, while two locally fabricated pistols and two Single Barrel Guns were recovered.
“Other recoveries include the sum of N387, 000. 00; 49 assorted brands of mobile phones, 43 phone chargers, assorted GSM SIM cards and recharge cards of different GSM networks valued at N36, 000. 00,” he concluded.
