Sports development: Jigawa to focus on grassroots hunts

In its quest for sports development, Jigawa State Government has said that it shifts its focus on grassroots taping out of hidden talents with a view to coming out with formidable and strong teams of any sporting events.
This was stated by the state Acting Director of Sports, Alhaji Ja’afaru Muhammad Shua’ibu in an interview with our correspondent yesterday in Dutse, the state capital.
He said that last week the Directors of Sports in the North West Sports Zonal Office of the Federal Government met in Kaduna and discussed extensible on how to develop sports in the zone and concluded that grassroots sports development was the only answer to their quests of moving their states forward in the area of sports growth.
The Acting Director of Sports disclosed that his office has concluded arrangements to organize seminars and workshops where local government heads of community development, sports development officers and other stakeholders in sports would be invited to present papers and teach sports practically for the youth in the grassroots so that hidden talents would be identified who will represent the state in any sporting events in the near future.
He said that two sporting events, weight lifting and volley ball were selected to begin with, as pilot programme in the three senatorial zones of the state and later on to move to all the 27 local government areas of the state.
Shuai’bu stated further that persons have already been sourced who will present paper theoretically and physical on how the athletes would protect themselves against COVID-19 and how sports would be managed under the scourge.
The director disclosed that now they picked seven events, basket ball, athletics, weight lifting, volley ball, traditional sports, hockey and badminton, stressing that now they selected only two for trial.
He said that in due course, other sporting events would be given attention such as judo and hand ball among others.
”Let me intimate you that I have the intention to revive all sporting activities in the state with the sports of the state government God will.
“Now the incoming seminars have been sponsored by Walin Kazaure, who is the chairman of volley ball association of the state,” Jafa’aru quipped.
