Plateau gets new PDP acting chair
From Christiana Gokyo, Jos
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat in Plateau State was under lock and key recently to deny the faction Chairman, Amos Gombi entrance.
The secretariat was besieged by heavy policemen at the gate.
The Triumph gathered that the National Working Committee of the party was informed to be aware of what Gombi has done for the party’s State Working Committee (SWC).
Investigation revealed that the party at the national level has apologised for the mistake of appointing Gombi earlier to be its acting chairman and has since withdrawn the letter given to him, adding that Chris Hassan has been given a letter on acting capacity.
The Triumph observed that the move is sequel to a letter recently written to the Acting Chairman, Hon. Amos Gombi, by the national secretary, directing Hon. Gombi, to work with the SWC, especially the State Organizing Secretary, to see to the smooth realisation of the emergence of the replacement of the immediate past chairman, Hon. Damishi Sango.
This letter, according to our findings, has motivated nocturnal meetings of some members of the party at the instance of the members of the party from the Northern zone to begin to fashion out how their nominee, Hon. Chris Hassan, for the position, would be sworn in few days from now.
The letter in part reads: “You should in collaboration with your State Working Committee (SWC), build a smooth road to the emergence of a new chairman in line with the constitutional provision.”
The directive, according to the National Secretary, was bone out of the meeting held on November 8, 2019, between the National Working Committee (NWC) and the critical stakeholders of the state chapter of the PDP, during which, it was resolved that the then state chairman, Mr. Sango, should resign and his deputy to take over on acting capacity.
Sen. Umaru, in the letter, stated that: “I now, on behalf of the National Working Committee (NWC) in compliance with the provision of Section 45 (2, 4) of our constitution, write as follows:-
“You are hereby directed to take over the position of the state chairman of our great party, the PDP in an acting capacity upon the resignation of Mr. Damishi Sango.
“You should liaise with the State Working Committee (SWC), especially the State Organizing Secretary, to cement all areas of conflict and challenges.
“You are to act from the period, Mr. Damishi Sango hands over to you until a new chairman is elected from Mr. Sango’s zone, who will complete the remainder of his tenure.”
Reacting on all the allegations, Hon. Amos Gombi, when The Triumph called to find out why the PDP secretariat was under lock, he said: “We are on vacation till on the 8th of January 2020 we will resume.”
