Why Nigerian Army embarks on environmental sanitation

New 3 Div GOC on confidence-restoration mission


The new General Officer Commanding 3 Armoured Division Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Rukuba, Major General Nuhu Angbazo has assumed duty with assurance of his commitment in restoring the confidence of citizens of Plateau state in the Nigerian Army.

Said he: “I come from the Department of Military Civil Affairs of the Nigerian Army Headquarters in Abuja; it is therefore very clear that the intention and vision of Chief of Army Staff is to have a very professional and responsible Nigerian Army in all of our activities.”

He added: “We will continue to engage the civil society organizations in ways that are enshrined in our constitution; we are to provide the enabling environment, the security and ensure that in every situation we find ourselves, we follow best global military practices.

“We are going to continue to carry out best practices in our engagements; we will also make sure that we are professional, firm and very fair and of course, we call on every peace-loving citizens of Plateau state to ensure that they see the 3 Armoured Division as their own Division and be able to engage us positively and offer us information on those who are likely to breach the peace,” he promised.

He also assured of mutual working relationship “and we will ensure that we have an environment that will bring about development, students go back to school, people will pursue their dreams peacefully and that is what this Division stands for.”

In his farewell to the troops, the outgoing GOC, Major General Benson said he was leaving the division to serve as the Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole.

While commending the troops for their support and loyalty and dedication to duty for the past three months, he urged the soldiers to give the needed cooperation to the in-coming GOC. 

He recounted his experience in the last 3 months of his stay on the Plateau, especially in the cases of farmers and herdsmen which have been of great concern causing the state dearly in terms of lives and properties for which all hands must be on deck.

He noted: “I took over the Command of this division on August 3rd, 2018, during that period I  went to Sudan for evaluation and I was going round my area of operation, and  was called back to come and continue with search and rescue operations for Major General Idris Alkali.

He explained further that, when he took over and by September 3rd, 2018 “exactly one month of my stay here, General Alkali  was killed and that was the operation we were conducting till 31st of October, 2018, his remains were seen, and a week after his burial, I was posted.

“There are contemporary security challenges in Plateau just like any other places, but this communal fight, herders and farmers clash are some of the major security challenges affecting Plateau state and we have been supporting other security agencies in the state to overcome that,” he explained.

According to him, in the case of the recent search and rescue operations for late Major General Idris Alkali, “we (3 Division) were directly tasked by the Chief of Army Staff to conduct it and that is why you see the result of the operation.”

He described his stay as a trying time for him, especially in handling the national assignment assigned to him by the Chief of Army Staff Tukur Buratai.
