…Settles over N500m inherited debt on scholarship

Kano State Government has presented certificates to four sponsored students who have successfully completed their degree at Cresent University, Abeukuta, Ogun State.


Presenting the certificates to the graduating students, the State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna said that the state government has settled the sum of over N500 million. representing 50 per cent of the total debt owed to five private universities and made commitment to pay the remaining 50 per cent by the end of this month.


He also said that the state governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has directed for the release of huge amount of money to settle some outstanding fees of the state students studying at private institutions in the country.


He further added that apart from this action taken by the administration, the state was strategising to bring a model that would allow for the continuous settlement of the money owed by the students either in foreign or within the country.


The deputy governor also disclosed that despite the huge debt left behind by the previous administration on scholarship, the state government was determined to continue to sponsor its students.


On foreign scholarship, Gawuna stressed that outstanding payment of tuition fees and sundry charges owed to various institutions abroad amounting to over N4 billion at the end of the last academic session was also settled by the Ganduje administration.


He then encouraged the graduating students to avoid wasting time and pursue with their Masters Degree as government would be ready to render them all the necessary support and assistance.


Earlier, the Executive Secretary of the state scholarship board, Professor Fatima Muhammad Umar disclosed that out of the 1,150 students sent to five private universities in the country by the last administration, over 90 per cent of them have now graduated and all their outstanding fees were settled by the administration.


Professor Umar said the state also settled the allowances for the internal students covering the 2015/2016 academic session at the sum of N352 million which was released in August this year.


One of the graduating students, Garba Gambo commended the effort of the present administration in giving them all the financial support needed to complete their programmes within the stipulated period.
