From Muawuya Bala Idris, Katsina
Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Katsina State has warned that it will resist any attempt by the state government to deduct workers’ salaries on account of COVID-19.
The state chairman of NLC, Comrade Husaini Hamisu Yanduna revealed this in a statement issued to newsmen for celebration of workers’ May Day with the theme: “COVID-19 Pandemic and Socio-Economic Impact on Nigerian Workers Class.”
Yanduna described deduction of workers’ salaries by some state governments as illegal and unacceptable.
“We strongly rise and stand firmly concerning the deduction of workers’ salaries by some state government purportedly on account of COVID-19.
“The leadership of state Congress is watchful with keen interest and closely monitoring on any move should the state may further move to such action.
“We remain on guard and jealously protect jobs, income, wages and livelihood of workers at these trying times,” he said.
He added that all efforts should be geared at maintaining, respecting and improving existing collective bargaining agreement.
He said in view of rising prices of essential commodities, government should provide palliative measures for the workers.
The chairman also called on the state government to provide all necessary safety equipment and distribute them across ministries and local government areas for the safety of workers.
“Government as a matter of urgency should ensure proper quarantine of all repatriated Almajiris to the state from other states before integrating them to their families,” he suggested.
Yanduna, who picked hole on composition of the state Taskforce on CIVID 19, called for inclusion of major stakeholders, especially labour into the committee membership.
He said his union commended the state government on the measure taken against spread of Coronavirus, appealing to workers to adhere strictly to the advice of medical expert from contacting the disease.
