As cases of Lassa fever continue to be recorded in Nigeria, Kazaure General Hospital in Jigawa State had one case which looked like a symptom of Lassa fever, but when the sample of the patient was taken after an analysis in Abuja, it was discovered to be negative, the Director Clinical Services of the hospital has disclosed.

Speaking to our correspondent in his office in Kazaure, Abba Ali said a woman from a village called Gezozi was admitted in the hospital had exhibited a symptom of Lassa fever -high malaria, bleeding and general weakness, among other related signs.

He said, they immediately quarantined the patient and took the sample of her blood an took it to the National Disease Control Centre, Abuja where after analysis was conducted, she was proved negative and was treated and discharged.

Ali added that they had trained and sensitized their medical, para-medical and non-medical staff on the signs and symptoms of Lassa fever and educated them on the danger associated with the disease, adding that a train the trainer workshop was also conducted for the staff.

On the seasonal diseases, the Chief Medical Officer of the Hospital, Dr. Mustapha Hassan said the most common ailment during this harmattan is catarrh while during the hot season is measles, saying that this time around they recorded few cases of malaria, catarrh and measles.

Dr. Hassan decried inadequate medical, para-medical and other staff as their biggest problems, pointing out that every month the management of the hospital spends over N1million for the payment of casual staff,
