Yobe State Ministry of Environment has started the clearing of blocked drainage systems and repair of damaged ones across Geidam, Gashua, Nguru and Potiskum towns.
The chairman of the Committee on the Evacuation of Blocked Drainages, Malam Muhammad Bagare told newsmen at the site of the clearance in Potiskum town, that the state government has embarked on the project in order to avert flooding and allow for smooth passage of water in the systems.
He said that some of the drainage systems in some of the communities were blocked, adding that if not evacuated, they would lead to flooding during downpour.
“We have commenced repairs and clearing of drainage systems. It is an annual event we undertake to ease free flow of water,” he stated.
According to him, the work was arranged in three ways: manual evacuation, mechanical and fumigation/spray of disinfectants.
“We have also enlightened the residents on health education and hygiene,” he added.
Bagare attributed the blockage to indiscriminate dumping of refuse and construction of some structures on the water ways.
The chairman advised residents to desist from it as their actions had contributed to the blockage of flow of flood.
