By Abdulyassar Abdulhamid
Concerned with challenges the state is facing amidst Coronavirus pandemic, non-partisan Kano elders, mostly professionals, serving and retired technocrats, businessmen, among others, met with the Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje via teleconference to assure their unrelenting support.
The chief concern of the elders, under the chairmanship of AB Mahmoud, SAN, is how to improve community engagement in the fight against the disease in the state.
The announcement of the meeting was contained in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the govenor, Malam Abba Anwar, on Saturday.
According to the statement, the governor disclosed this during the State Task Force media briefing, which took place at Africa House, Government House, Kano, Saturday.
According to the governor, other area of concern and interest by the non-partisan Kano elders is how to use technology in order to improve capacity and capability; almajiri phenomenon, palliative, among others.
Ganduje said: “We have decided to work out modalities and plan, as a good Plan of Action, so that we can avoid duplication of responsibilities with other arrangements. Very soon we will come with a Technical group for the engagement to take proper shape.
“We are doing all that we can to have more collection centres in our 36 distant local governments in the state. We have reached an advanced stage at that. This will go a long way in detecting community transmission with the view to crushing the pandemic.”
Speaking on the lockdown imposed in the state, he said that his administration is still aware of and conversant with the 3 Ls, that of Life, Livelihood and Liberty issues, surrounding lockdown process, both locally and globally,
He added: “It is either you take your life and that of your family and other members of the society very serious and stay home and observe other protocols to stay safe or you assume that livelihood matter supersedes your life; or you think you are at liberty to move around as you wish, while disregarding your life. We are really conscious of this sequence.
“If people observe the protocols, then the relaxation of lockdown is in sight, considering that the lockdown cannot be forever. What we need to do is to examine and produce more proactive measures.”
