APC crisis: Deputy Speaker clears air
From Suleiman Lawal, Lafia
The recent crisis which engulfed, All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State has taken a new dimension following accusations and counter accusations of who is responsible for the problem.
The Triumph gathered that it was alleged that there was a level of distrust or double loyalty from the party chairman, Mr. Micah Magaji, which led to his suspension from office during an emergency meeting held at Akwanga.
Source told our correspondent that the problem started when political king pins in the area sponsored Magaji to play double game of being anti Governor Abdullahi Sule.
Our correspondent reliably gathered that activities of the suspended chairman did not go down well with pro-Sule, where a meeting was called and Mr. Magaji was removed from his position as chairman of the party in the area.
Immediately, his vice was sworn in by one of the governor’s aids into the position.
A statement by APC state secretariat signed by its secretary, Alhaji Aliyu Bello, expressed dismay over the development.
They described the action as affront on the leadership of the party in the state.
Consequently, the state working committee has recognized the embattled chairman as a substantive chairman of the party the area.
The statement said: “Party members are warned that APC is running by the constitution/guidelines. In an attempt to disrespect our constitution, it will be amounted to anti- party activity which it may result to disciplinary committee.
“We call on all leadership of the party in Akwanga Local Government Area to support present leadership.”
In an interview, the political leader of APC in Akwanga and Deputy Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Hon. Nehemiah Dandaura, cleared air on issues rocking the party in the area, saying that the embattled chairman betrayed them as he shifted his loyalty to someone else instead of being 100 per cent loyal to Governor Sule.
“It will be pertinent to note that all the acquisition fingered at me is not correct. Our action is an effort to save APC from the hands of people who are not committed or weak in leadership of the party,” he stated.
While answering question on the allegations making round that Governor Abdullahi Sule facilitated the suspension and removal of the embattled chairman from office, Hon. Dandaura asked: “How could he (Sule) do that?”
He added: “Let me be frank to our governor, he doesn’t know anything about the suspension of the APC chairman of Akwanga thought he comes from that Local Government Area, it is purely party affairs.
“What I mean by party affairs is that officials of the party in Akwanga decided to take this action as a result of lack of leadership quality exhibited by the suspended chairman. That is what I can tell you.
“If you are following political activities of Akwanga, you will understand that there was a meeting summoned by APC stakeholders to fine tune ways out to also stitch its differences in a round table without pointing accusing finger on anyone.”
The Triumph gathered from an insider that Mr. Micah is no longer faithful to the party and Governor Sule.
Information available shows that the essence of the crisis was not far from 2023 election as APC is divided into factions on Sule’s second term bid in office.
Our correspondent reports that the embattled chairman, Mr. Micah has joined the faction of the former deputy governor of the state, Mr. Salas Ali Agara, former Senator, John Danboyi and others who were having sleepless nights working to ensure that Sule’s second term dream didn’t come to be in 2023.
Investigation revealed that the crisis between Sule and Senator Danboyi, who was the Director General of Governor Sule’s campaign organisation in 2019 election manifested shortly when the Director, Youth Mobilisation of the organisatipon, Yakubu Kwanta was appointed Special Adviser to Governor Sule.
This action didn’t go down well with him.
Another factor was the recently, an ambassadorial nomination was done in the state to which Senator Danboyi wanted his name to top the list, but at the end, chairman of the state Independent Electoral Commission picked the nomination as ambassador representing the state.
This also triggered the problem.
The was another press release by the APC state working committee dated July 23, 2020 affirming the suspension and removal of Mr. Micah from office as a panel was setup to investigate all allegations leveled against him.
